THE INTRUSIVE WORLD BEHIND THE REDLIGHT AND PUNCHLINES

As a journalism enthusiast, I’ve come across some fascinating facts that truly inspire me and might resonate with you too. Did you know that the first printed newspaper dates back to 1605? A Germany publication titles “Relation aller Furnemmen und gedenckwurdigen Historien” which directly translates to relation of all the native and memorial history- holds this historical title. What’s even more interesting is that back then, journalism was more about sharing gossip and sensational stories, paving the way for what would eventually become “yellow journalism”.

Long before the internet and its infamous clickbait circles, the late 19th century saw the rise of yellow journalism. This style of reporting focused on scandalous, exaggerated and sometimes false stories all in the name of selling papers. It was a battle for readership between giants like The New York World and The New York Journal. This sensationalism is the ancestor of modern tabloid headlines and viral online content.

Studying journalism is a path that fuels my passion for storytelling and a pursuit of truth and one of the most exciting and intrusive elements of journalism is going undercover. You see journalism is more than just reporting; it is about telling stories that can change lives as every article has the potential to influence public opinion and spark social change. Anas Aremeyaw Anas for instance, has worked on several undercover investigative stories for which most of the offenders got jail time. His undercover stories have clearly illustrated how journalism can shake up the status quo. Knowing that I could contribute to such a legacy motivates me everyday.

One of the most important reasons I chose to pursue it is the ability to give a voice to the voiceless and shed light on issues that impact the society. Journalism equips me with skills to ask the right questions, hold powerful figures accountable and ensure that critical stories are heard. Through journalism, I get to engage with the world in real time, understand the dynamics of current events and how they shape our future. It also allows me to become an informed citizen encouraging me to think critically, analyze facts and approach situations with objectivity.

The opportunity to constantly learn and grow is another reason. Everyday in journalism is different, requiring me to be adaptable, open-minded and creative. Whether I’m covering breaking news or writing in depth features, I’m constantly exposed to new perspectives and challenges that sharpen my mind.

As a journalist, I see my role as being a voice for those who might otherwise go unheard. A journalist acts as a mirror reflecting the realities of the society and a form of oversight akin to a police force, ensuring accountability. The benefits of this role are profound especially in the realms of human rights and justice.

From podcasts to video storytelling, journalism comes in many forms allowing for creative expression and innovative ways to engage audiences. The news landscape is now more interactive especially with the digital evolution on how news is consumed and shared.

Journalism is a game changer with a unique blend of impact and opportunity. As the backbone of democracy, journalists uncover truths, hold power accountable and amplify local stories. Lucrative opportunities in various formats have risen and transformed from traditional print to online platforms. Skilled journalists are in high demand with competitive salaries and diverse career paths available. Moreover, the ability to influence public opinion and drive social change makes journalism not just a job, but a vital profession that shapes society and fosters informed communities.
