Beyond tricks and treats, I see October as an optimal month to focus on my health—both mental and physical. With World Mental Health Day on October 10th, I’m reminded of the importance of nurturing my mental well-being. This month also brings awareness to several important health issues, such as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, World Arthritis Day, World Allergy Day, and World Menopause Day. Its healthy to recognize how deeply mental health impacts the overall well-being, influencing everything from academic performance to relationships. By paying attention to our mental health, we can foster resilience and create a supportive environment for ourselves and those around us.
There was a time in my life when everything felt like it was crumbling around me. My mental health was at an all-time low—I was constantly anxious, overwhelmed, and unable to focus. This stress spilled over into my physical health, too. I barely had the energy to get out of bed, let alone take care of my body. I lost weight drastically and every day became a cycle of avoidance and self-doubt. I could see good opportunities slip away because I wasn’t in the right headspace or physical condition to seize them. Everything felt like a heavy burden and even the simplest tasks felt overwhelming. I was physically tired all the time and my body ached from the little motivation I had to move. Even though I knew I needed to take care of myself, the weight of my mental state made it hard to do anything about it. It felt like I was trapped in a cycle of exhaustion and helplessness, with no clear way out.
Then one day, I decided enough was enough. I started by reaching out for support, beginning with therapy to tackle my mental health struggles head-on. Alongside that, I incorporated regular exercise, starting small with daily walks. Slowly but surely, I built a routine of working out, meditating, and eating healthy meals. The combination of mental clarity and physical energy transformed my outlook on life. I regained my focus, took control of my future, and began to excel in ways I hadn’t thought possible. The more I invested in both my mind and body, the stronger I became in both areas.
The first step to overcome depression was acknowledging that mental health is just as vital as physical health. I began to understand how my thoughts and emotions directly influenced my physical state. When I felt overwhelmed or stressed, it often manifested in physical symptoms like fatigue or headaches. This realization pushed me to prioritize practices that nurtured my mind, such as mindfulness and meditation. Taking just a few minutes each day to breathe and reflect helped clear my mind and reduce anxiety.
This awareness highlights not just mental health but also vital physical health issues. I’ve learned that mental and physical health are interconnected; such that when I prioritize my mental well-being, I often see improvements in my physical health too. For students like me, focusing on both aspects can lead to enhanced focus, resilience, and success in our studies and personal lives. In addition, I also made a conscious effort to improve my physical health. Regular exercise became a cornerstone of my routine. I found that even a brisk walk or a short workout not only boosted my energy levels but also significantly improved my mood. I learned to appreciate the endorphins that come with physical activity, turning exercise into a rewarding habit rather than a chore. Eating well was another key component. I started paying more attention to my diet, incorporating more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. The impact was immediate—I felt more energized and focused, which positively affected both my studies and my interactions with others.
In essence, October serves as a powerful reminder that by caring for my mind and body, we can cultivate a healthier, more fulfilling life—one that supports our growth and enables us to thrive in all our endeavors.
